This week I went to see US country star Kacey Musgraves at The Sage, Gateshead (Monday 9 Nov).

The concert was opened by Sugar & The Hi Lows, Trent Dabbs and Amy Stroup who are solo singer/songrighters in their own right. Probably they are best known in the UK for writing songs from the TV series Nashville e.g. Don’t Put Dirt On My Grave Just Yet – Juliet Barnes/Hayden Panettiere.

Kacey and her band (who were dressed in pink suits with lights embedded) kicked off with the title track Pagent Material from her album and then worked their way through most of the album. She included a country version of REM’s Yellow which I thought was even better than the original. The audience which was made up of a variety of ages were all singing along and enjoying the show and Kacey seemed pleased that they knew all the words. She commented that the UK audiences apprecieted her lyrics more than the US audiences. For her final song she came on stage wearing cowboy boots with flashing lights and did a country rock cover version of These Boots Are Made For Walking.

The atmosphere and incredible lighting made the concert a memorable experience.
